Village Carpets

The building which now houses Village Carpets dates from the early 19th Century but the frontage has been modernised.

In the 1930s it was known as Baileys, a confectioner, tobacconists and tea shop and was a popular stopping off place for cyclists.

An incendiary bomb dropped on the shop in World War 2 and some of the trees on the Green across the road were damaged.

I personally remember the shop on this site being called Webster's toy shop (1970s) It was particularly well known for its range of build-your-own Airfix models.
